Shirley Winthrop - Arthuret Parish Councillor
Now a senior citizen. Born just outside Longtown, I attended Longtown Infants then Longtown County Mixed School leaving at 15 years. I initially worked part time on market stall outside Marks and Spencer selling fruit, veg, flowers and sweets, as my mother was ill I ran the home and looked after my parents.
In October 1963 I started my SRN and part 1 Midwifery training at West Cumberland Hospital. After 6 months working on the district in South Shields. As there were no posts in Cumbria on completion of my training I worked at British Steel in Workington in the Accident Department. The next 2 years were spent working night duty at Workington Maternity Unit then going back to British Steel while waiting for my Health Visiting Course to start in Durham. I qualified a year later and returned to work in Workington then Maryport as a Health Visitor (the happiest time of my life, Maryport people are the “salt of the earth”).
I got married during this period eventually returning to West Cumberland Maternity for the next 25 years. Retiring at 61 years on ill health grounds after 41 years in the NHS. I returned to my roots Longtown that I always called home.
Sadly widowed 2 years ago my interests include Animals and conservation, wildlife, many church committees and other church duties (reader, flowers, side-person etc.) Antiques, Vintage tractors, W.I. etc.
I organise a Senior Citizens Luncheon Club monthly and support all local charities. I enjoy being a councillor and provoke opposition to the benefit of the Parish!
