What We Do

Allotments

There are 71 allotments on Carlisle Road managed by the council, the land being leased long term from the Grahams of Netherby Estates. Rent for an allotment is £20 per year. If you want further information or would like to put your name on the waiting list please contact us.

Riverside

We employ a local person for 10 hours a week who cleans litter from The Scaur and Dollies Brae on a daily basis. There are 2 play areas on Dollies Brae, one for Under 7 years that is enclosed and a log rail for the older children. As part of a bigger project when a walkway was built linking Dollies Brae with The Scaur we also installed new seating, picnic tables and litter bins. The parish council provide lifesaving equipment on the riverside and it is imperative that this equipment is not tampered with as it is there for the purpose of saving lives.

Bus Shelters

We own and maintain 4 bus shelters in the parish.

Sandysikes (2)

BMX Track

The track was built following representation from young people and youth workers in the town lobbying the council. We were able to secure grants for the project; the project cost was £18,000. For those who want to use the track and don’t have access to a bike there are bikes and safety gear available to loan from Barnardos Children’s Centre.

Council Rooms

The clerk’s office is based in the building and all council meetings are held here. The Council Rooms is also available to hire for community groups or events. The current cost is £10 per hour for local groups.

Moot Hall

The Moot Hall is owned by Carlisle Diocese with the parish council having a 21 year lease on the building. The lease expires in 2021. It is available to hire.

Recreation Grounds

Playing fields between Old Road and Lochinvar Close. A children’s play area is adjacent to the fields. This has recently been taken over by the parish council from Carlisle City Council.

Former Lochinvar School Site Moor Road

There are 2 senior and 1 junior football pitches adjacent to the BMX Track. The former caretaker’s bungalow has recently been renovated to community changing room facilities and a community meeting room. Contact the parish clerk if you want to discuss hire of these facilities.

Bobbin Mill Gardens

We maintain the grassed area that is planted with trees and shrubs and 2 seats and litter bins adjacent to the gardens.

War Memorial

The War Memorial is sited on Carlisle Road outside the Longtown Memorial Hall Community Centre.

Churchyard Grass Cutting

The parish council are not allowed by law to pay for the grass cutting at the church yard. They do, however, support the production costs of the monthly newsletter and maintenance work at St Michaels Well. A 3,000 pounds grant was given to Arthuret Parochial Church Council in the financial year 2019/2020.

Flowerbeds

The planting out watering and maintenance of the flowerbeds in the centre of the town is carried out by a contractor and put out to tender on annual basis.

Trees

We are responsible for the trees in English Street, Esk Street, Bank Street and Swan Street. The work is put out to tender on an annual basis.
